Local SEO for Law Firms: How to Win the Map Pack

For most law firms, the three listings in Google's map pack are worth more than every organic result beneath them combined. They sit above the standard listings, they carry a phone number and directions, and they are what somebody in immediate need actually taps. This guide covers what local SEO means for a law firm, how Google decides which firms appear in the map pack, and the work that moves those rankings.

What is local SEO for law firms?

Local SEO is the work that makes a firm visible for searches tied to a place, including the large number that carry local intent without naming a city at all. Google treats a search for a family law attorney as inherently local and answers it with results near the searcher, which is why a firm can rank nationally for a term and still be invisible to the people who could actually instruct it. It runs on a partly separate set of signals from the rest of SEO: your Google Business Profile, proximity to the searcher, reviews, and the consistency of your firm's details across the web.

Why does the map pack matter so much for law firms?

Because it compresses the decision to three options, a star rating and a call button. Most people choose from those three rather than scrolling, which makes reviews the deciding factor between firms that are otherwise equally qualified. The bar has risen sharply. In 2026, BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, that 74% want feedback posted within the last three months, and that 31% will only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher, nearly double the 17% who said so a year earlier. A strong rating earned three years ago no longer does the job by itself. The same survey recorded a shift in where people read those reviews. Google's share fell to 71% from 83% a year earlier, while AI tools such as ChatGPT rose to third place at 45%. For a law firm, that means review content is increasingly being summarised by a model before a prospective client ever sees the profile, which puts a premium on reviews that describe the matter and the outcome rather than simply awarding stars. How does Google decide local rankings?

Google names three factors in its Business Profile documentation: relevance, meaning how well a profile matches the search; distance, meaning how far the business is from the searcher; and prominence, meaning how well known the business is. Google also states plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Distance is largely outside your control. Relevance and prominence are not, and that is where the work sits.

Google Business Profile

The profile is the foundation, and the primary category is the single most consequential field on it. A firm listed under a generic category competes for the wrong searches. Choose the category matching the cases you want, then complete every remaining field: practice areas as services, hours, service areas, and photographs of the actual office rather than stock imagery. Two rules are worth stating plainly. Use the firm's real name, because keyword-stuffed business names breach Google's guidelines and are straightforward for a competitor to report. And use a genuine, staffed address, because virtual offices are a common cause of suspended profiles in the legal category.

Reviews, and how recent they are

Reviews feed directly into prominence. Google's own documentation states that more reviews and positive ratings can improve local ranking, and the BrightLocal recency findings above mean the flow matters as much as the total. A firm collecting two reviews a month indefinitely will outperform one that gathered thirty during a single push two years ago. The difficulty specific to legal is that satisfied clients are often reluctant to be publicly associated with their matter. Firms that solve this build the request into the closing process, keep it to one link, and never suggest what the review should say.

Location pages that are genuinely local

  • One page per staffed office. Not one per city you would like cases from. Pages for places you have no presence are thin content and are treated as such.
  • Real local detail. The actual address, an embedded map, parking and transit notes, the courts served, and the attorneys who work there.
  • Distinct copy. Templated pages with the city name swapped are the most common local SEO failure in legal, and they are trivially easy for Google to identify.

How to build local citations for a law firm

A citation is any mention of your firm's name, address and phone number on another website. Start with Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places, then the legal-specific directories and your state and local bar association listings. Accuracy matters more than volume. Legal has an unusually dense directory presence, so inconsistencies accumulate quietly, particularly after an office move or a change in the partnership. Auditing existing citations before creating new ones is almost always the higher-value task, because a wrong address propagating across forty directories does more damage than forty missing listings. What about firms with more than one office?

Each staffed office needs its own Business Profile and its own location page, and they should not target the same terms. Because distance is a heavy ranking factor, offices in genuinely different areas rarely take rankings from each other. Two offices a short drive apart are a different matter and need deliberate handling, usually by differentiating the practice areas each page leads with. Multi-office firms also have to decide how reviews are distributed. Reviews attach to the profile, not to the firm, so a group with one dominant office and three quiet ones will find the quiet offices struggling in their own markets despite the firm's overall reputation. Routing review requests to the office that actually handled the matter fixes this over time and is more accurate anyway.

What are the most common local SEO mistakes law firms make?

Four errors account for most of the lost visibility: a generic primary category, location pages for cities where the firm has no staffed office, inconsistent details left behind after a move, and review activity that arrives in bursts rather than continuously. All four are correctable, and none require new content. A fifth is subtler and harder to undo. Some firms list a partner's name as the business name, or add practice areas to it, because it appears to help. Google's guidelines require the real-world name, and a competitor can report the profile in under a minute. A suspension in the middle of a competitive quarter costs far more than the ranking bump was ever worth.

How long does local SEO take for a law firm?

Faster than broad organic rankings. Profile corrections and category changes can move results within weeks, and a consistent review programme typically shows an effect inside three to six months. Competitive urban markets in high-value practice areas take longer, because every established firm is doing the same work.
