How Much Does SEO Cost for a Law Firm?

Legal is one of the most expensive markets in search, and the cost of SEO reflects it. The reason is simple arithmetic: one converted case can be worth thousands, so every firm in your city is bidding and optimising for the same terms.

How much does SEO cost for a law firm?

Most US firms retain between one and ten thousand dollars a month, and the spread tracks competitiveness rather than firm size. A family law practice in a mid sized city sits near the bottom. A personal injury firm in a major metro sits near the top and often above it. The variable that matters most is not how many lawyers you have. It is how many other firms want the same searches in the same geography, and how much each of them is already spending. Because the returns justify it, so the competition escalates. Practice areas where a single case is worth a large fee attract sustained investment from every firm in the market, and the bar for ranking rises accordingly. Legal content also carries a higher production cost. Search engines apply extra scrutiny to topics that affect someone's finances or legal position, which means content written by or reviewed by an actual attorney rather than a general copywriter. That is slower and more expensive to produce, and it is not optional. A page for each practice area you want cases from, which is the single highest impact structural item and the one most often missing. Firms routinely list eight practice areas on one page and wonder why they rank for none of them. Local visibility work, because most legal searches carry local intent and the map pack sits above everything else. That means the Google Business Profile, review generation and consistent listings, not only the website. Content that answers what people actually search before they call, which is usually procedural anxiety rather than legal theory. How long does this take. What will it cost. What happens at the first meeting. And authority work, since legal is a market where links and citations from genuine legal and local sources still separate firms that rank from firms that do not. Longer than most industries. Six to twelve months is a realistic expectation for competitive practice areas, and anyone promising faster in personal injury is describing terms nobody searches. Local and long tail terms move first, often within a few months, and they convert well because the intent is specific. The broad practice area terms in a major metro are a multi year project.

Is SEO better value than paid search for a law firm?

Paid search in legal is among the most expensive advertising available anywhere, with click costs in the hundreds for the most contested terms. It buys immediate visibility and stops the moment the budget does. SEO costs more up front in time and less over the life of the asset. Most firms that can afford both run both, using paid search to find which terms actually convert before committing months to ranking for them. Our law firm SEO team routinely uses ad data that way, because it turns a guess about intent into a measurement.

What should you avoid when hiring?

Anyone guaranteeing first position, since nobody controls the ranking. Anyone unwilling to explain how links are acquired, because in legal the shortcuts are common and the risk lands on your domain. Anyone whose reporting is traffic without cases. Also be careful with agencies that resell the same content across multiple firms in different cities. It is a real practice, it is detectable, and it means your differentiation is a city name.

How to tell whether it is working

What the money buys in the first ninety days

Usually structure rather than content. Practice area pages built or rebuilt, the Google Business Profile completed properly, technical problems cleared, and a review process started. That sequencing is deliberate. Publishing content onto a site with one page covering eight practice areas and an incomplete profile is spending on the roof before the walls exist. Firms often find the profile work produces consultations before any content ranks, because the map pack sits above the organic results and the requirements to compete in it are far lower than most firms assume.

Practice area pages are the structural core

One page per area you actually want cases in, each answering the questions a person in that situation asks before they call. Not a paragraph of legal definitions, which is what most firms publish. The test is whether someone frightened and unfamiliar with the process would finish the page feeling clearer. Legal buyers are usually buying reassurance and competence, in that order, and the page that provides both wins even at a lower ranking.

Reporting that survives a partner meeting

Signed cases by source, consultations booked, and the specific terms being targeted with their current positions. Three numbers, all verifiable. Traffic, impressions and keyword counts describe activity rather than outcome. They are worth tracking internally and worth very little as the headline of a report to people paying for cases. Track signed cases by source, not sessions. Traffic that does not become consultations is a vanity metric, and legal is a market where a small number of high value conversions matter far more than volume. Ask for the specific terms being worked on and their positions, then search for them yourself. Anything you cannot verify independently is worth less than it appears in a report, and any competent agency will expect the question. A realistic way to think about the budget is against case value rather than against other marketing spend. If a signed case is worth several thousand dollars in fees, a retainer that produces one additional case a quarter has paid for itself, and the compounding matters more than the monthly number. That framing also protects you from the wrong comparison. Firms often benchmark an SEO retainer against what they pay for a directory listing, which is a different product with a different lifespan. The right comparison is against what the same money buys in paid search, where in legal it frequently buys a few dozen clicks. Whichever way you go, insist on knowing which practice areas the work is aimed at and in which geography, in writing, before the first invoice. Legal SEO fails most often not because the work was bad but because it was spread thinly across eight practice areas and three cities, and produced no visible position in any of them. Concentration is the single most reliable lever available. One practice area, one city, properly resourced, will produce cases long before a broad campaign produces rankings, and it gives you evidence about what works before you scale the spend. Finally, be wary of comparing quotes on price alone in this market. Two proposals at different monthly rates are frequently describing different amounts of senior attention, different content standards and very different approaches to acquiring links. Ask each to describe a month of work in specifics, and the gap between them usually explains the gap in price better than any line item does.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Often yes, provided the targeting is realistic. A small firm competing on broad terms in a major metro will struggle. The same firm targeting specific practice areas in specific neighbourhoods, with a strong Google Business Profile, can do very well because the intent is high and the competition is thinner.
